In Break Away, Jessie Montgomery creates “a seamless dialogue between the written score and the whims of the quartet” by asking the group to improvise. And Beethoven broke free from Classical norms in his masterful String Quartet op. 59, no. 1, changing the history of the string quartet in the process.
