Alexandra Bryant’s Lady Isabelle Was That Kind of Woman is inspired by the English folk tale of Lady Isabelle, who ultimately wins her freedom in dramatic fashion from Sir John, a wealthy knight with a bad habit of drowning women. And Beethoven overcame his own encroaching deafness to create the masterful Quartet op. 59, no. 1, changing the history of the string quartet in the process.
